The UA Team at the Symposium “Monuments Today: Stone and Pixels”
On June 12, 2026, the UA team (ESO and TEMOS) from the AGREE project participated in the conference “Monuments Today: Of Stone and Pixels” organized by the National Institute of Tourism (INNTO) at ESTHUA, University of Angers.
This conference brought together researchers and practitioners to discuss the theme of monuments and the challenges they face at the intersection of the public sphere and the digital world.
Hélène Pébarthe-Désiré, Johan Vincent, and Quentin Brouard-Sala presented a paper titled “What heritage values and strengths are embodied in replicas of ships from the Age of Discovery and European Expeditions?” during the session “When Monuments Tell a Potentially Painful Story.”
In this presentation, the team discussed the various types of ship replicas from this period and the issues involved.
Beyond the scientific challenges of reconstructing these replicas, many are built in conjunction with major exhibitions to highlight a past commemoration.
It was also an opportunity to demonstrate how these ship replicas contribute to the tourist identity of the locations, and even to the urban identity of the cities that host them.
