Working Meeting with EICR for the creation of the Great Atlantic Nautical Explorations Cultural Route
On 10 March, an online working meeting was held between representatives of the European Institute of Cultural Routes - EICR, the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Provincial Council of Huelva, with the aim of advancing the establishment of the future Great Atlantic Nautical Explorations Cultural Route, promoted within the framework of the AGREE project.
The meeting was attended by Rui Gomes, Director of the European Institute of Cultural Routes; Sergio Ortega Muñoz, Head of the Heritage Protection and European Programs Service at the Spanish Ministry of Culture; Esther García Vidal, Head of the Local Development and European Funds Service at the Provincial Council of Huelva; as well as technical staff from the participating institutions.
During the meeting, the main strategic lines for the development of this new European Cultural Route were discussed. The initiative is conceived as a transnational cooperation project aimed at enhancing the historical, cultural and heritage legacy of the great nautical explorations and their impact on European territories linked to the Atlantic area.
Participants agreed on the ambitious and innovative nature of the proposal promoted through the AGREE project, underlining the importance of clearly defining the theme and objectives of the future route in line with the principles and criteria of the Council of Europe Cultural Routes Programme.
The meeting also highlighted the need to engage younger generations in the development of the route by fostering their active participation through educational, cultural and heritage awareness actions. Likewise, the participants stressed the potential of this initiative to promote a sustainable cultural tourism model based on territorial cooperation, the valorisation of Atlantic heritage and the sustainable development of the participating territories. It was also recommended to establish a framework for cooperation with the destination countries linked to the great nautical explorations.
The creation of the Great Atlantic Nautical Explorations Cultural Route constitutes one of the main strategic objectives of the AGREE project, with the ambition of ensuring continuity and consolidation beyond the project’s duration through the establishment of a stable Atlantic network for cultural and institutional cooperation.
